SELECTING A DISSERTATION TOPIC

A good dissertation topic has to be interesting enough to sustain you and focused enough to finish

Choosing a dissertation topic can feel enormous because students often believe they are choosing the subject
that will define their entire career. In reality, the strongest topic is usually one that sits at the intersection of
genuine interest, a meaningful problem, available evidence, methodological feasibility, and the requirements
of your program.

“Leadership,” “small business,” or “education” are areas of interest, not yet dissertation problems. Ask what is
unknown, inconsistent, underexplored, or happening in practice that deserves investigation.

SBH DISSERTATION NOTE: A topic tells us the area. A research problem tells us why a study is needed.

An exciting idea becomes difficult if you cannot reach the population, obtain records, recruit participants, or
collect the required data within your timeline.
Think about access before becoming emotionally attached to a design.

SBH DISSERTATION NOTE: Feasibility is part of scholarly quality.

Students often begin too broad. Narrow by population, location, industry, phenomenon, timeframe, or another
defensible boundary.
A focused study is not a smaller accomplishment. It is usually a more manageable and coherent one.

SBH DISSERTATION NOTE: Your dissertation does not need to answer every question connected to the topic

Do an initial literature scan before committing. You need enough research to ground the study but also a
defensible reason for additional research.
Pay attention to recent recommendations, limitations, conflicting findings, and populations or settings that have
received less attention.

SBH DISSERTATION NOTE: The literature helps you refine the question before it becomes a proposal.

Do not choose a method because it sounds impressive. Consider what kind of evidence is needed to answer the
research question and what your program permits.
Your research question, design, data collection, and analysis should fit together logically.

SBH DISSERTATION NOTE: Methodology follows the research problem and question.

You will read, write, revise, and talk about this topic for a long time. You do not need to be obsessed with it, but
you should care enough to stay engaged when the process becomes repetitive.

SBH DISSERTATION NOTE: Interest helps, but feasibility is what gets the study completed.

The best dissertation idea is not necessarily the biggest or most original idea you can imagine. It is a meaningful
study that you can defend, execute, and complete within the boundaries of your program.
Give yourself permission to narrow. A clear study usually begins with a clear problem
